FISHING REPORT JAN 29th 2015

It’s Thursday, partly sunny/cloudy, light/variable winds, 0 % chance of rain with an expected high about 42 degrees. Sunset will be at 5:25 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be at 7:06 AM. First tide is high at 2:55 AM and low at 9:35 AM. Second tide is high at 3:15 PM followed with the low at 9:26 PM. Water temperature at the Duck Research Pier this morning is posted at 41 chilly degrees.

Haven’t heard of any fish caught on the northern beaches the last couple days and if the actual water temps are hovering around the low 40s, I can’t really blame the fish for not wanting to feed. It would take a lot of energy for them to move around in water that cold. The tackle shops down south haven’t posted any reports lately so I assume there haven’t been many anglers trying, given the weather we’ve had of late. We are in the heart of the winter season but be optimistic, the days are rapidly getting longer. Comparing sunrise/sunset for today with Jan 1st, todays daylight is 33 minutes longer than it was for New Years Day. Doesn’t that almost make you feel warm and toasty. Summer is on the way!!!

FISHING REPORT JAN 23rd 2015

Mostly cloudy this Friday, high about 47 with a significant chance of rain tonight and tomorrow. Winds NE 10-15 clocking E then S later and building causing a high surf advisory with seas 8-12 feet overnight. Sunset at 5:19 PM, sunrise tomorrow at 7:09 AM. First tide for Jennettes pier is a low at 3:06 AM with the high at 9:13 AM. Second tide is low at 3:40 PM followed with a high at 9:42 PM. Water temp at Duck pier mucho frio @ 43 degrees this morning.
If the surf temps are really in the low 40s, many fish won’t feed. It is unclear if it is too cold for digestion to occur or it just takes too much energy for a fish to actively hunt prey. Thoughts?? At any rate, there have been no recent reports on the northern beaches lately and with the weather forecast for the weekend I’m not hopeful. Good luck

FISHING REPORT JAN 20th 2015

It’s a foggy Thursday on the sandbar. Winds are mostly NW 10-15, expected high around 46 degrees with a waist to chest swell on the northern beaches. Sunset tonight is 5:15 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be at 7:10 AM. First tide is low at 2:13 AM with the high at 8:23 AM. Second tide is low at 2:51 PM and high at 8:49 PM.

First hand accounts, people I speak with directly about what they caught or saw, had nothing to give me this past week – either no fish were caught or they didn’t go. Digging deeper with second and third hand reports, a few (very few) puppy drum were landed on bait from the beaches and around Oregon Inlet. Down south from Buxton to Hatteras Inlet the water is much warmer and in addition to sharks skates, dogfish and drum, catches may occasionally include trout, sea mullet, croaker and bluefish. Jennettes is the only pier on the OBX open for business and when they actually have someone fishing, the report is usually skates and/or doggies.
Good luck, Coolbreeze out

FISHING REPORT SAT 1/17/2015

Sunny but cool today, high about 44 degrees, wind N 10-15, shifting later to light E.  Sunset at 5:13 PM with sunrise tomorrow about 7:12 AM.  First tide for Jennettes Pier is a low at 4:22 AM with a high at 10:44 AM.  Second tide is a low at 4:28 PM followed with the high at 10:41 PM.  Water temp at Duck pier is posted today at 45 degrees.

Slim fish reports lately – early in the week I did read of a first hand sighting of 2 surf fishermen coming back from the jetty area of Oregon Inlet each carrying a 20#plus striper.  Every once and awhile I hear of a slot sized drum taken from the beach, usually around O. I.

Back in 2013 researchers in the Cape Cod area put a satellite tag onto the dorsal fin of a female 14 ft  great white shark and affectionately named her Katherine.  On Friday evening Jan. 9  after cruising through Oregon Inlet, Katherine’s tag pinged her location just northeast of Stumpy Point at 8:45 PM.  14 hours later she pinged again just south of Swan Quarter.  At that point she must have gotten really pissed off cause less than 3 hours later she pinged again on the other side of Cape Hatteras after dashing through Hatteras Inlet!!!
