May 14th 2015 FISHING REPORT

It’s a cool but sunny Thursday May 14th on our sandbar today, the wind is NNE 15-20.  We’re expecting a high about 64 degrees, a 0% chance of rain with a choppy wind/swell sea state.  Tide is low at 10:46 AM, high at 5:03 PM and low again at 11:37 PM tonight.  Sunset is at 8:00 PM and sunrise tomorrow is at 5:58 AM.

Calling around this morning the piers were active.  Outer Banks pier was beating up the sea mullet early on then turned into spots later in the morning at the end of the pier (very grassy inside).

Jennettes reported bluefish, sea mullet, spot, sea perch and puffers

Avalon also was decking blues, sea mullet, puffers and spot plus several keeper speckled trout and even a 36 in striper taken on a drum rig fished inside.

Jennettes pier said their water temp was 55 degrees and Duck pier reported theirs at 64 degrees which leads me to believe the water is probably cleaner as you go north.  Infrared imagery shows surface water temps at Cape Hatteras and points south much warmer in the 70+ range.

If I were looking for a fish I would probably hike out to the point and see what would munch on my drum rig.  If I wanted a bunch of fish, I’d target bluefish with my 1o ft light heaver somewhere around the Cape.
