Fishing Report Feb 8th 2014

For Sat, Feb 8th, expect mostly cloudy skies and a 70% chance of rain with NNE winds 15 – 25.  High today around 47 degrees, sunset at 5:36 PM and tomorrow’s sunrise at 6:57 AM.
First tide is high at 2:18 AM with the low at 9:03 AM
Second tide is high at 2:35 PM with the low at 8:48 PM

Duck pier posted their water temp at 41 degrees this morning.  Sat/imagery of the waters around Cape Hatteras early today show surface water temps in the high 40s.
Unfortunately yesterdays Bluefin search was unproductive – they weren’t skunked, but no Bluefin were located.  Was chatting with a marine fisheries agent yesterday and he confirmed there was good fishing for puppy drum on the south side of Oregon Inlet the last several days.  The fishing reports on Red Drum Tackle’s website indicate although there aren’t always a lot of folks fishing, the slot-sized red drum catching is still very good.

Fishing Report Feb 7th 2014

Monday Feb 7th looks to be a fairly nice day.  Was surprised to see we had a dusting of snow last night – I can handle that.  High today in the low 40s, light north winds, mostly sunny with a 0% chance of rain.  Sunset will be at 5:35 PM with sunrise tomorrow around 6:58 AM.
First tide is high at 1:11 AM and a low at 7:54 AM
Second tide is high at 1:27 PM followed by a low at 7:45 PM

A couple boats left the docks today searching for Bluefin tuna – wishing you luck, guys.  I did hear of some puppy  drum landed on the beaches around Oregon Inlet yesterday.  If you haven’t got a driving permit for CHNS, the south side of the inlet would be my choice ( it’s a short stroll to the old coast guard station ).
If you don’t mind the drive and have a park permit, the beaches around cape point are still holding good numbers of puppy drum.

Spring is just around the corner, they say.

!!!!!SPECKLED TROUT SEASON CLOSED!!!!!

Effective  at noon Feb 5th 2014, the recreational and commercial season for speckled trout is closed.  According to NCDMF a recent cold stun event has impacted the N C spotted sea trout population and Marine Fisheries has taken this measure to protect the breeder class of these fish through the spring spawn.  According to the proclamation posted on the NCDMF website it is “the intent of the Fisheries Director to open the spotted seatrout season ….. on June 15, 2014.”  I’m sure there will be more information on this to follow.  Stay tuned.

Fishing Report Feb 2nd 2014

Super Sunday on the sandbar is going to start out somewhat foggy.  Expect mostly cloudy skies, a high about 58 degrees, SW winds 10 – 15 mph with a slight chance of rain.  Sunset is at 5:30 PM and tomorrows sunrise will be at 7:03 AM.
First tide is a low at 2:53 AM followed with a high at 8:57 AM
Second tide is low at 3:22 PM followed with a high at 9:25 PM

If anyone is interested in unplugging themselves from the lazyboy  and going fishing, I have heard the puppy drum bite has resumed on the south side of Cape Hatteras.  The report from TWs said there were lots of drum in the sloughs around Oregon Inlet yesterday.  Slot sized red drum have provided an exceptional fishery this season.  Here’s hoping these fish become an exceptional breeder class.

Take a kid fishing!!!   Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Jan 28th 2014

It’s 29 degrees as I post this and that will probably be today’s high.  Winds are N 20 – 30, the forecast calls for a 90% chance of snow later with an accumulation of 1-2 inches with more tonight and tomorrow, heavy at times.  Todays sunset at 5:24 PM likely will not be visable and neither will tomorrow’s sunrise at 7:06 AM.
First tide is a high at 4:37 AM followed with a low at 11:10 AM
Second tide is high at 4:57 PM with the low at 11:13 PM

I seriously do not expect anyone to attempt fishing on the northern beaches for the next couple days.  That being said, the report from Hatteras Island is that several puppy drum and black drum were caught Monday afternoon on the south side of Cape Hatteras.  Day old satellite imagery show warm water eddies at cape point.  There are folks talking about fishing the point tonight for drum during the snowstorm.  If you live down there, I’d say knock yourself out – if you live on the northern beaches, you might want to re think that option.

This is the short version – conditions on the sandbar are going to be horrendous the next couple of days!!!  Expect freezing temps, high winds, icy roads with 4 – 8 inches of snow.  As long as we don’t lose power, we should be all right.  Just hunker down and don’t try anything foolish like with indoor grills or generators or whatever.

Stay safe, stay warm, good luck.    Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Jan 27th 2014

Monday Jan 27th is calling for mostly cloudy skies, 0% chance of rain and a high of 53 degrees.  Winds will be SW 10 – 20, sunset will be at 5:23 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be at 7:07 PM.
First tide is a high at 3:37 AM followed with a low at 10:11 AM
Second tide is a high at 3:55 PM with a low at 10:13 PM

Yesterday Jennettes pier posted the water temp at 47 degrees and reported anglers catching spiny dogfish.  Sat/imagery showed the water temp around cape point at 61 degrees and Red Drum tackle reported speckled trout and puppy drum from the beaches.  When you can get a 15 degree increase in sea water temp with a one hour drive, it’s probably worth your time, weather permitting.

Tomorrow is a different day – the expected high Tuesday will be around 27 degrees, northerly winds 22 – 29 mph and snow likely after 1 PM possibly heavy at times, continuing into early Wednesday afternoon.  Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Stay warm,   Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Jan 24th 2013

Friday Jan 24th is expected to be partly cloudy, winds NW 15 – 25 with the high in the low 20s.  Sunset will be at 5:20 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be at 7:09 AM.
First tide is high at 12:32 am followed with the low at 6:56 AM
Second tide is high at 12:42 PM with the next low at 7:07 PM

When I came into work this morning the air temperature was posted at 19 degrees.  The brisk NW wind got me thinking someone would need to be seriously motivated to go fishing in these conditions.  What about those commercial guys on “The Deadliest Catch” t v show – even the filming crew is risking their safety to roll tape.  I feel like a wuss bitching about a measly 19 degrees.

Red Drum Tackle reported lots of puppy drum were hooked between Buxton jetties and cape point on Thursday.  No word on any catches on the northern beaches.  Jennettes Pier posted the water temp at 42.  Duck pier posted it at 41 degrees.
