Fishing Report Oct 16th 2013

For Wednesday Oct 16th, under cloudy skies expect a high of 74 degrees, NNE winds 10 – 15 and a slight chance of rain.  Sunset is at 6:27 pm with sunrise tomorrow at 7:10 am.
First tide is high at 5:45 am and low at 12:12 pm
Second tide is high at 6:05 pm with the next low early tomorrow morning

Ocean temp is 68 degrees and the surf is murky with a disorganized swell.  As the winds back around tonight and tomorrow to the W and SW expect the waves to start cleaning up with smoother faces.  Anglers on the piers and beaches are catching fish especially drum and sea mullet.

Gary B at Fishing Unlimited says “the little bridge is the best show in town” for specks and puppy drum – while I’m sure there are other places in the sound that produce fish, Fishing Unlimited at the Melvin Daniels Bridge is the only place I can call and get an eyeball, first-hand report.

I did not hear of any boats going out today but you can still come in to the Stop n Shop and tell your best fish story or order a fresh breakfast biscuit.  As always,  TAKE A KID FISHING!!!   Cool breeze out

Fishing Report Oct 14th 2013

For Monday, Oct 14th, that damn NE wind is back – I shouldn’t whine, I recall one year it blew NE 15-25 for 1  1/2 months straight.  Today we’re looking at 20 – 30+ with a high of 74 and a slight chance of rain.  Sunset is 6:30 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 7:08 am.
First tide is high at 3:49 am with a low at10:11 am
Second tide is high at 4:15 pm with a low at 10:43 pm

Chatting with Budgie Sadler at Avalon this morning, he remarked some of the guys at the end were using 12 oz sinkers and were still having a hard time holding.  When I have to throw 10 – 12 oz of lead, I’m thinking I need to fish somewhere else.  This morning they had 3 old drum come over the rail  and several slot-sized pups.  Was also told lots of large spot (yellow bellies) were taken home yesterday.
Conditions are a little dirty and grassy in the surf today and I’m sure the breeze is creating a stiff sideshore current and disorganized swell that make it difficult for surf fishing but I’ll bet there are puppy drum and sea mullet to be had.
Not a boat day.  Long range weather suggests this wind may drop out by Wednesday

TAKE A KID FISHING!!! And bring us a fish story.  Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Oct 13th 2013

Sunday Oct 13th started out pretty dark, damp and dreary, kind of like a Halloween movie, but now the sun is peeking out and burning off the haze, it looks halfway decent.   Expect a high in the mid 70’s, winds NE 15 – 20, slim chance of rain with sunset at  6:31 pm and sunrise tomorrow at 7:07.  Surf is rough, water is cloudy and 68 degrees at Duck Pier.
First tide is high at 2:45 am and low at 9:00 am
Second tide is high at 3:11 pm and low at 9:46 pm

The piers are catching and releasing large red drum regularly this weekend.  Puppy  drum are being hooked from the surf, sounds and the piers – fresh mullet and sand fleas are the bait of choice.  Rumor has it a stringer of speckled trout with a nice puppy drum was seen carried off the beach north of Avalon early this morning.   I checked w/the piers and their hours are as follows:
Avalon – 5 am to midnight ( use the side gate after midnight )
Nags Head – 5 am to midnight ( use the side entrance after midnight )
Jennettes – 6 am to midnight ( the pier is secured after midnight )
Outer Banks – 6 am to midnight (the pier is secured after midnight )
With the exception of Jennettes, the piers usually close for the season after Thanksgiving weekend.

The little bridge reported slot size and better puppy drum this morning along with mixed sized specs and flounder.  Of late I’ve been hearing of trout and drum being caught near the ends of the Wright Memorial Bridge with access being  relatively good.

Fishing Report Oct 10th 2013

For Thursday Oct 10th the ocean is very rough with a large disorganized swell.  As I post this report the sun is starting to peek through the windows of the store.  The forecast calls for E winds 10 – 15+, a lot less than yesterday, and a smaller chance of rain.  Duck Research Pier posts the water temp at 68 degrees.  Sunset is 6:35 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 7:05 am.

At midday anglers on Jennetts Pier had caught some spot , bluefish, small croaker and a 24in puppy drum.  OBX Pier only had a few fishermen catching some spot.

The 63rd annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament kicked off at 7:30 this morning with the teams facing challenging conditions.  Have some early info that the fishing teams were able to access the beach and that fishes were caught and scored.  I will update as I receive more details.
