Fishing Report Oct 8th 2013
For Tuesday Oct 8th, not exactly the weather we would have preferred for the week of the Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament but it’s what we got, so we’ll suck it up and deal with it ( o k, some of us will deal with it ). Winds out of the N E at 20 – 30+ mph will make fishing in the ocean on the north beaches “challenging”. Todays high will be around 68 degrees under cloudy and very possibly rainy skies. Water temp at the end of Duck Pier is 72 degrees (warmer then the air if you’re thinking about swimming). Sunset is 6:38 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 7:03 am.
First tide is low at 3:54 am and high is 10:09 am
Second tide is low at 4:42 pm and high is 10:29 pm
Avalon reported they had some diehards on the end who decked 7 old drum this morning. Jennettes Pier had 1 drum by 9 am. Fishing Unlimited said there were several small stripers caught and released early.
Definitely not a boat day – no one left the docks.
If you’re looking for a place to fish today, how about striped bass in Wanchese Harbor. I know there are fish around the fish houses and some of the docks – it’s worth a try. Take a Kid Fishing…. Coolbreeze out
Fishing Report Oct 7th 2013
The forecast for Monday, Oct 7th 2013 includes a high of 79 with a 50% chance of rain and S winds at 15 – 25 mph. Sunset tonight is 6:39 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 7:02 am. Enjoy the weather cause tomorrow is a different day.
First tide is low at 3:08 am and high is 9:22 am
Second tide is low at 3:52 pm and high at 9:29 pm
Be advised, the S-n-S air pump is working again – it wasn’t a cheap fix, but it is operating. If you drive on our beach, trust me, your buggy will navigate on and off the ramps more easily at a lower tire pressure and our air hose is less than 200 yards from the Carolton street access ramp (and it’s FREE). Call ahead at 441-6105 and order your favorite fresh deli sandwich.
This week is the annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament so we’re hoping for good conditions and great fishing for everyone involved. Good luck to all!!!
Duck Research Pier posted the water temp at the end of their pier at 72 degrees. Calling around to the other piers, they tell me the water is dirty and calm and catching is a little slow. Avalon said there were 2 big drum released last night. Nags Head Pier reported some blues, sea mullet and spot. Outer Banks Pier said there were scattered catches of spot, sea mullet, croaker and black drum.
As always, Take a Kid Fishing…. Coolbreeze out
Fishing Report Oct 6th 2013
Another fine weekend on the sandbar we call the Outer Banks of N.C. Today will be sunny, winds are SE 10-15, expected high is 81 degrees and a 0% chance of rain. Sunset is 6:41 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 7:01 am.
First tide is low at 2:26 am and high is 8:38 am
Second tide is low at 3:04 pm and high is 8:54 pm
Surprising to me is that it’s such a bluebird day out there and the piers are still catching big drum. Water conditions are clear and calm, water temp is still 70 degrees and surf is small or nonexistent. In addition to the big drum, reports include small stuff like spot , croaker, pompano, bluefish and sea mullet.
Been hearing of lots of bait around. I did hear early in the week that large, yellowbelly spot were being caught in Va Beach. Maybe the next northeaster will help their stubby little fins get down here to us.
Since the sound striper season opened, there have been a lot of boats trolling the Coinjock ditch with moderate success.
Latest word from down south in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the park LEOs are not restricting pedestrian access to the beaches – read that as they are short-staffed and not able to handle the small stuff.
Enjoy the weather and bring us a fish story. Take a kid fishing, Coolbreeze out
Fish Report Oct 3rd 2013
Posted under the gloomy potential of a totally unnecessary and preventable crisis imposed by the federal government shutdown it’s another beautiful fall day on the sandbar we call the OBX. The forecast calls for light and variable winds under sunny skies, a high near 80 degrees with a 0% chance of rain. Regardless of our elected congress sunset is around 6:45 pm and the sun will rise tomorrow at 6:59 am.
First tide is low at 12:28 am, high at 6:36 am
Second tide is low at 12:52 pm and high at 6:48 pm
Duck Research Pier lists the sea water temp as 70 degrees. Calling around the word is the ocean is dirty under calm conditions. Fishing is kinda slow with catches of spot, croaker, sea mullet, puppy drum (many slot-sized) and some bluefish.
Oregon Inlet captains are operating, just not out of the O.I. fishing center. Call 441-6301 for specific information on your favorite Oregon Inlet charter boat – otherwise, it’s business as usual.
At the little bridge I’ve heard of some trout and stripers mostly small. Even though sound striper fishing season opened Oct 1st, I haven’t heard of any one targeting them yet. The bigger bridges would be my first choice. Just learned of a puppy drum honey hole yesterday that I’m drooling to check out (shallow water, easy access).
Fish stories, we need more fish stories!!!!!!! TAKE A KID FISHING!!! Coolbreeze out
Fishing Report Oct 2nd 2013
The federal shutdown is having a significant impact on many OBX commercial operations, especially on Hatteras Island. Cape Hatteras National Seashore is closed to the public. Oregon Inlet Fishing Center is a park service concession and even though privately operated is forced to close. OIFC charter captains have relocated their vessels to other venues to meet their charter obligations. Beach accesses from Coquina Beach to Ocracoke have been chained off or blocked by the park service. I’m saying it, you need to be made of tough stuff to live on Hatteras Island. We tend to think what happens in D.C. doesn’t effect us much but I work for a business a couple hundred yards from the Wright Brothers Monument. The park is most definitely closed and I know people who work there. Not jumping on the soapbox but this political standoff is affecting too many citizens at a time when our economy is beginning to turn around for the good and now it’s starting to get in the way of my fishing. Trust me, this is not a good thing. Let me go back to my cave and chew on this awhile.
