Fishing Report March 24th 2014

For Monday March 24th, expect a high about 40 degrees,  NE winds 15 – 25 MPH with partly cloudy skies and a 0 % chance of rain.    Sunset is at 7:16 PM with tomorrow’s sunrise at 7:00 AM.
First tide is a high at 1:40 AM with a low at 8:16 Am
Second tide is a high at 2:08 PM followed with a low at 8:30 PM

Other than a few dogfish from Jennettes pier, I haven’t heard of any fish landed on the northern beaches for several days.  Down south on Hatteras Island yesterday morning, good drum fishing was reported from the point to the old Frisco pier.
The water temp today at  Duck pier is posted at 43 degrees.  Satellite imagery at Cape Hatteras shows the surface water temp in the low 50s to the high 40s this morning.
Significant chance of rain tomorrow plus more of a cool down the next few days.  Winter isn’t over just yet, ( heavy sigh ) so sorry.  No need to run out and cut the grass.

Fishing Report March 17th 2014

For March 17th, St Patricks Day, the forecast is for a high of 44 degrees, NNE winds 25 – 35 MPH,  50% chance of rain.  Sunset is at 7:11 PM with a sunrise tomorrow at 7:11 AM.
First tide is a low at 2:33 AM with a high at 8:32 AM
Second tide is low at 2:47 PM followed with the high at 8:53 PM

What started off as a perfectly lovely weekend degraded into what is hopefully winter’s last gasp.  Thursday March 20th is officially the first day of spring but I don’t really expect winter to gracefully fade away this year.  Water temp at Duck Research pier was posted this morning at a high of 43 degrees.  I have heard of a couple puppy drum landed on the south side of Oregon Inlet plus a few dogfish on Jennettes Pier, otherwise the pickings  on the northern beaches have been slim and none.

When the ocean permits it, the offshore fleet has sent some crews out to bring home a few Bluefin trophy fish.

Down south Saturday was a good day on Hatteras Island.  Red Drum Tackle reported nice puppy drum landed at the Buxton jetties, Cape Hatteras and ramps 49 and 55.  Recent satellite imagery showed the sea water temp from Buxton to Ocracoke in the low 60s.  If that temperature would hang around for awhile, we might start hearing of some sea mullet and blowtoads in the coolers.

Have a pleasant St. Paddy’s Day,              Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report March 8th 2014

For Sat March 8th the forecast calls for sunny skies with 0% chance of rain (or anything else),  Expect a high of 56 degrees with West winds 10 – 15 MPH.  Sunset is at 6:03 PM with tomorrow’s sunrise at 6:24 AM.
First tide is high at 12:25 AM and the low at 7:10 AM
Second tide is high at 12:48 PM followed with the low at 7:03  PM

Freezing temps, deadly wind chills, snow, sleet, gale force winds with ocean overwash and the occasional power outage – for the week that was, if you didn’t like the weather you only had to wait a little while for something different.  Right now I’m guessing what to do with the bright glowing orb in the sky overhead.  To describe March as “coming in like a lion” appears to be a bit of an understatement this year.  The weekend is here and the weather dramas appear to be over.  The ocean is still churning for now but this west wind should calm it down a bit.

Fishing Report Mar 3rd 2014

For Monday,  March 3rd, expect a pretty snotty day as forecasters are calling it a 90% chance of rain/sleet, possibly snow later.  Winds will be NE 20 – 35, gusting higher.  Sunset is at 5:58 PM and tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 6:30 AM
First tide is low at 2:38 AM with the high at 8:36 AM
Second tide is low at 2:54 PM followed with the high at 9:00 PM

Today is definitely not a fun day to go fishing.  Checking the pier cam at Avalon convinces me I don’t want to be there or surf fishing either.  As I post this, the weather radar shows the rain line just north of  the store, with the snow line right on top of Elizabeth City.  To be sure, most of us have had enough of winter to last us for awhile.  For now I’d say “Be safe, stay home, find your snuggle bunny and stay warm!!!”

Fishing Report Feb 24th 2014

For Monday Feb 24th, a little cooler today, expect a high around 48 – 50 degrees, mostly sunny skies with a 0% chance of rain and winds N 10 – 15 mph.  Sunset will be at 5:52 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be 6:40 AM
First tide is high at 2:08 AM with the low at 8:43 AM
Second tide is high at 2:30 PM with the low at 8:52 PM

Last word from Oregon Inlet sounded like the puppy drum action had slowed down on the south side.  The fish weren’t really biting, mostly being snagged and they weren’t all packed in like before.  Water temp at Duck pier is posted at 43 degrees this morning.  A couple days ago Jennettes pier reported they could see the drum in the water but the fish were refusing to bite.

Down south the pups were still hitting grubs and shrimp from the point to ramp 49.  Checking the satellite imagery, the water temp today at the cape and south beaches is in the high 50s to low 60s.  Yesterday between ramps 49 and 55 some anglers were catching a few sea mullet.

A little cooler this week with a slight chance of snow on Wednesday.
