Fishing Report Dec 27th 2013

Friday Dec 27th is calling for a high  of 48 degrees  and sunny with a 0% chance of rain.  Winds will be N 10 -15 mph shifting later to the NE and diminishing.  Sunset is 4:55 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 7:12 am.
First tide is a high at 2:06 am followed with a low at 8:32 am
Second tide is a high at 2:16 pm and the low at 8:37 pm

Christmas is over and lots of us are still working off the sugar rush from left over cookies and candy canes.  Ocean water temp on the northern beaches is posted at 50 degrees and it’s a little rough out there with the north winds stirring it up.  Jennettes pier reported some skates were decked yesterday and that is all I’ve heard so far up this way.
Red Drum Tackle in Buxton reported puppy drum were landed all day at Cape Hatteras all day yesterday.  Also caught were some speckled trout, black drum and unspecified sharks.

Mid 50s expected tomorrow.  Homemade chicken noodle soup in our deli today to take off the chilly north breeze.

Fishing Report Dec 24th 2013

HO,  HO,  HO,  BAH,  HUMBUG!!!
What a difference a day makes – only a 25 degree differential.  Todays high of 43 helps to ensure that Santa’s reindeer don’t get overheated on their globe trotting journey tonight. His reindeer are very strong and powerful animals, they have to be to help Santa complete his all night task.  When they’re not working for Santa, they’re playing their reindeer games and they can get a little rowdy and every now and then,  a reindeer will lose its tail.  Santa can’t  go around the world with his deer like that, so he makes sure to take them to the “RE-TAIL STORE” before they shove off from the North Pole.  I’m glad you’re aware of all the trouble he goes to for all the “KIDS” in this world.

Fishing Report Dec 23rd 2013

Forecasts call for a 90% chance of rain but as I post this it’s pretty bright outside.  Expect the high to be in the low 70s with the winds from the SSW 15 – 25+ mph.  Sunset is 4:53 pm and tomorrows sunrise will be 7:10 am.
First tide is low at 4:43 am followed with a high at 10:44 am
Second tide is low at 5:16 pm with the high at 11:26 pm

I came into the Stop n Shop last nite around 7:30 to retrieve something, and one of our friendly locals (I didn’t get his name so I can’t give him credit, so sorry) was weighing a 30 3/4″ speckled trout he caught from his kayak at the hot ditch up in Virginia.  Nine plus lbs and NO PHOTO!!!  If I ever get more info I will update it.
Jennettes pier has posted the water temp at 59 degrees which is downright balmy for this time of year – their catch of the day so far is a skate and a spiny dogfish.  The closer we get to Xmas the harder it is to scrape out a fish report.

Fishing Report Dec 22nd 2013

For Sunday Dec 22nd 2013, expect a high in the low 70s with mostly sunny skies becoming  cloudy later.  Winds will be southerly 15-25 mph with sunset at 4:52 pm and sunrise tomorrow at 7:10 am.
First tide is low at 3:59 am followed with a high at 10:03 am
Second tide is a low at 4:36 pm and the high at 10:40 pm

The winter solstice arrived comfortably yesterday – it usually signals the first day of winter by being the shortest day/longest night of the year.  I’d be fine with 60 – 70 degree days for the rest of the season, but I’ve lived here long enough to know it’s not a realistic expectation for the OBX.  At least I will take some comfort knowing the days are getting longer now.  Expect some rain tomorrow and a cooldown into the 40s for Xmas Eve day.  With weather conditions like these, I don’t think we’ll see ocean stripers around the sandbar.

It’s good to be a pirate on the Outer Banks!!!

Fishing Report Dec 20th 2013

Friday Dec 20th is looking to be kind of comfortable with mostly sunny skies, high around 62 degrees and S winds 10 – 15 mph.  Sunset is expected at 4:53 pm and sunrise tomorrow will be at 7:09 am.
First tide is a low at 2:36 am followed by a high at 8:48 am
Second tide is low at 3:23 pm with the high at 9:16 pm

The weather for the whole weekend looks good so if you want, you can think of it as an early Christmas present and enjoy it.

Here is what I know, there are stripers being caught in the Chesapeake Bay – I’ve heard of schools of fish working bait concentrations in the mouth of the bay – there are also fish being found around the pilings of the bay bridge.  I have heard of schoolie stripers caught around our bridges in the sounds but none yet in the ocean.

The water temps on the northern beaches are running between 48 – 52 degrees (depending on the weather) but when you get around Avon the temps bump up to 60 – 64 degrees.  That is a significant rise for less than an hour drive away.  Buxton beaches down to Cape Hatteras are still producing decent numbers of slot-size puppy drum and some speckled trout with flounder and sea mullet mixed in.  If you really want to chase trout, go to the “hot ditch” in Virginia (check out 2 local bro’s in the ditch at “Into the fog” at www.a-teamfishing.com ).

I believe there are fish in the surf on the northern beaches but there just aren’t many people fishing.

Fishing Report Dec 17th 2013

It’s Tuesday Dec 17th under mostly sunny skies and we’re expecting a high temp about 59 degrees with a 0% chance of rain.  Winds will be SW 10 – 15 mph.  Sunset  today is at 4:51 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 7:07 am.
First tide is a low at 12:41 am followed by a high at 7:01 am
Second tide is high at 1:41 pm with the low at 7:20 pm

The water temp at Jennettes pier is posted at 50 degrees today.  They reported someone landing a puppy drum yesterday but nothing so far today.  TW’s tackle said there were some drum beached in the Avalon area yesterday.  There haven’t been a lot of fishing reports lately – I believe there are fish around to be caught just not many people fishing.  Must be in holiday mode I guess.

It’s good to be a pirate.

Fishing Report Dec 16th 2013

Monday  Dec 16th, today’s high will be in the mid 40s but at least the sun is out with a 0% chance of rain.  Winds will be northwest to west 10 – 15 mph,  sunset will be 4:50 pm with the sunrise tomorrow at 7:06 am.
First tide is low at 12:02 am followed by a high at 6:24 am
Second tide is low at 1:05 pm and high at 6:42 pm

The bridge is open, the bridge is open, the sun is shining, the bridge is open!!!  If you decided to drive down to the Buxton jetties to fish for drum, after leaving the Stop n Shop you’d be there in just over a hour cause the BRIDGE IS OPEN.  After buying your eels at the Stop n Shop for $1.99 each, less than 30 minutes later  you could fish for stripers from the catwalks at Oregon Inlet cause the BRIDGE IS OPEN.  You can drive over the inlet and past the dunes to grandma’s house in Hatteras village with a personally selected gift basket hand-made by one of the cuties at the Stop n Shop, cause the BRIDGE IS OPEN.

AARRGGHH!!!
