Fishing Report Jan 4th 2014

For Sat Jan 4th, expect it to be mostly sunny with a high about 44 degrees, light NE winds and a 0% chance of rain.  Sunset will be at 5:01 pm and tomorrows sunrise will be at 7:14 am.
First tide is low at 3:07 am followed with a high at 9:16 am
Second tide is a low at 3:47 pm with the high at 9:47 pm

Coming to work this morning was down right chilly in the high 20s but at least it wasn’t blowing 20 – 30 mph like yesterday.  People keep asking if there has been any action on ocean stripers, but I haven’t heard anything yet that would indicate that we will have an ocean rockfish season on the OBX.  During the week there were some puppy drum landed on the beaches at Oregon Inlet and around Cape Hatteras but that has cooled off along with the  weather.

There is now a size and possession limit on Black Drum in North Carolina.  Effective 01/01/2014, recreational anglers are allowed to keep 10 black drum per day between 14″ – 25″.  Of those 10 fish, 1(one) may be over 25 inches.  Previously there was no size or possession limits for black drum.  Some anglers confuse small sheepshead and black drum – aside from having a different body shape and mouth configuration, the drum always has barbells or “whiskers” under its chin that are easily recognized.

Fishing Report Dec 31st 2013

For Tuesday Dec 31st, New Years Eve, expect it to be mostly sunny, high in the low 50s with a 0% chance of rain and winds NW 10 – 15 mph.  Sunset will be at 4:58 pm and sunrise tomorrow at 7:13 am.  If you’re celebrating outside tonight it should be clear and cool with light westerly winds.
First tide is a high at 5:49 am followed with a low at 12:23 pm
Second tide is high at 6:09 pm with the next low tomorrow morning at 12:23 am

It looks like it ‘ll be fine weather for ringing in the New Year – clear and cool with light winds (to accommodate  all those fireworks that seem to show up regardless of the local regulations).  Still a lot of those “Class of 2011” puppy drum being caught around Oregon Inlet and Cape Hatteras beaches with the occasional skate and spiny dogfish in the mix.

Have a safe and HAPPY NEW YEAR.  PARTY RESPONSIBLY!!!

Fishing Report Dec 30th 2013

It’s Monday, Dec 30th and it looks like a fine day to goof off from work.  Forecast calls for a NW wind at 10 mph, projected high around 54 degrees, a 0% chance of rain.  Sunset is 4:57 pm and tomorrow’s sunrise is 7:13 am.
First tide is high at 4:56 am followed with a low at 11:29 am
Second tide is high at 5:14 pm with the next low at 11:27pm

“CARPE DIEM!!”  Seize the day!!   Get out there and enjoy our favorite sandbar.  If I could sneak away from the store this afternoon, I’d head down to Oregon Inlet with a bag of bait shrimp and my favorite light surf stick and search for some pullage.  Today I would target some slot sized puppy drum.  I recall several years ago getting a tip about the inlet on this very same day, Dec 30th.  My tackle was in my SUV (as it should be this time of year).  I drove down to ramp #2 and as I rolled over the dune there were 25 – 30 vehicles lined up and nearly all the anglers I could see were bowed up –  IT WAS A BLUEFISH BLITZ.  The water was calm, the swell was very small, less than a foot, and you could stand at the edge of the water and watch as those chopper blues had their way with the very frightened peanut bunker right in front of you.  I caught the tail end of that event which was the last blitz I’ve seen to date, but still a fine memory to end the year with.
Seize the day,   TAKE A KID FISHING!!!!

Fishing Report Dec 27th 2013

Friday Dec 27th is calling for a high  of 48 degrees  and sunny with a 0% chance of rain.  Winds will be N 10 -15 mph shifting later to the NE and diminishing.  Sunset is 4:55 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 7:12 am.
First tide is a high at 2:06 am followed with a low at 8:32 am
Second tide is a high at 2:16 pm and the low at 8:37 pm

Christmas is over and lots of us are still working off the sugar rush from left over cookies and candy canes.  Ocean water temp on the northern beaches is posted at 50 degrees and it’s a little rough out there with the north winds stirring it up.  Jennettes pier reported some skates were decked yesterday and that is all I’ve heard so far up this way.
Red Drum Tackle in Buxton reported puppy drum were landed all day at Cape Hatteras all day yesterday.  Also caught were some speckled trout, black drum and unspecified sharks.

Mid 50s expected tomorrow.  Homemade chicken noodle soup in our deli today to take off the chilly north breeze.

Fishing Report Dec 24th 2013

HO,  HO,  HO,  BAH,  HUMBUG!!!
What a difference a day makes – only a 25 degree differential.  Todays high of 43 helps to ensure that Santa’s reindeer don’t get overheated on their globe trotting journey tonight. His reindeer are very strong and powerful animals, they have to be to help Santa complete his all night task.  When they’re not working for Santa, they’re playing their reindeer games and they can get a little rowdy and every now and then,  a reindeer will lose its tail.  Santa can’t  go around the world with his deer like that, so he makes sure to take them to the “RE-TAIL STORE” before they shove off from the North Pole.  I’m glad you’re aware of all the trouble he goes to for all the “KIDS” in this world.

Fishing Report Dec 23rd 2013

Forecasts call for a 90% chance of rain but as I post this it’s pretty bright outside.  Expect the high to be in the low 70s with the winds from the SSW 15 – 25+ mph.  Sunset is 4:53 pm and tomorrows sunrise will be 7:10 am.
First tide is low at 4:43 am followed with a high at 10:44 am
Second tide is low at 5:16 pm with the high at 11:26 pm

I came into the Stop n Shop last nite around 7:30 to retrieve something, and one of our friendly locals (I didn’t get his name so I can’t give him credit, so sorry) was weighing a 30 3/4″ speckled trout he caught from his kayak at the hot ditch up in Virginia.  Nine plus lbs and NO PHOTO!!!  If I ever get more info I will update it.
Jennettes pier has posted the water temp at 59 degrees which is downright balmy for this time of year – their catch of the day so far is a skate and a spiny dogfish.  The closer we get to Xmas the harder it is to scrape out a fish report.

Fishing Report Dec 22nd 2013

For Sunday Dec 22nd 2013, expect a high in the low 70s with mostly sunny skies becoming  cloudy later.  Winds will be southerly 15-25 mph with sunset at 4:52 pm and sunrise tomorrow at 7:10 am.
First tide is low at 3:59 am followed with a high at 10:03 am
Second tide is a low at 4:36 pm and the high at 10:40 pm

The winter solstice arrived comfortably yesterday – it usually signals the first day of winter by being the shortest day/longest night of the year.  I’d be fine with 60 – 70 degree days for the rest of the season, but I’ve lived here long enough to know it’s not a realistic expectation for the OBX.  At least I will take some comfort knowing the days are getting longer now.  Expect some rain tomorrow and a cooldown into the 40s for Xmas Eve day.  With weather conditions like these, I don’t think we’ll see ocean stripers around the sandbar.

It’s good to be a pirate on the Outer Banks!!!

AARRRGGHH!!
