Fishing Report: 9/3/13

September 3rd calls for a high of 82 degrees and a 50% chance of rain. Winds will be SW at 10-15 mph. Sunset tonight is 7:29 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:36 am. Piers are calling the ocean water temperature at 72-74 degrees.
First tide is low at 12:38 am, high at 6:33 am
Second tide is low at 12:38 pm, high at 6:45 pm

Checking with the piers, the seas are flat and the water is not as dirty as yesterday. Fishing is a little slow with some bluefish and sea mullet. Nags Head had a couple large sheepshead.

Inshore boats stayed at the docks yesterday, haven’t heard their status today.

Offshore fishing is still a hot ticket for white marlin in multiple numbers. Mahi-mahi and tunas are filling the fish boxes.

Surf fishermen around Oregon Inlet are finding a decent puppy drum bite using fresh mullet.

Fishing Report: 8/30/13

The weather this weekend looks pretty comfortable. Today’s high should be around 80 with 0% chance of rain.
Winds will be NE 10-15.
Seawater temp is hanging at 74-75 degrees with wave height about 2-3 ft.
Sunrise was 6:32 am, Sunset is 7:35 pm
First high tide 3:10 am, low tide 9:15 am
Second high 3:46 pm, low 10:36 pm

Piers are reporting clean water with fair catches of sea mullet and bluefish and some spot. Jennette’s said they have some pompano and sand perch in the mix. If you’re interested in catching a white marlin the offshore action is white hot right now. Decent catches of mahi-mahi and tuna help to fill the fish box. Speck and puppy drum action in the sound is picking up at select locations.

Fishing Report: 8/28/13

Today’s high temp will be 87 degrees. Winds will be SW again at 10-15 mph. Forecasts call for partly cloudy skies and a 50% of rain during the day increasing to 60% in the evening. Sunrise is at 6:30am, Sunset is at 7:37pm. Tides at Jennette’s Pier: 1st high 1:07am, low 7:20am – 2nd high 1:47pm, low 8:38pm.

Contrary to yesterday’s prediction, beach and pier fishing was fairly decent. Water temps stayed in the mid 70s and the water got cleaner in the pm. Sea mullet, small spot, bluefish and some small puppy drum were landed during the day. Checking with the piers, they all reported a mixed bag with mostly bluefish, sea mullet and spot, also a few puppy drum and pompano.

Unsure if the charter fleet is going out today but Tuesday was pretty good – offshore boys landed over 100 marlin, lots of mahi-mahi and some yellowfin tuna. Inshore boats caught cobia, amberjack and triggerfish. Nearshore took lots of bluefish and spanish macs from the ocean and some speckles and puppy drum from the soundside.

Anyone looking for a surf fishing adventure, Cape Hatteras (the point) is open to vehicular traffic (driving permit required).

Good luck to all. As always, take a kid fishing!!! Coolbreeze out.

Fishing Report: 8/27/13

Sunrise is 6:29am, sunset is 7:39pm, high temp expected 86 degrees, 0% chance rain.
Tides: 1st high @ 12:14am, low @ 6:29am – 2nd high @12:51pm, low @ 7:35pm
Winds will be mostly SW 10-15 mph.

Monday pier and beach reports included decent catches of bluefish and puppy drum (mostly on cut-bait) with some sea mullet and spot in the mix (bloodworms, fishbites & shrimp on bottom rigs).

Because of the prevailing winds backing around to the SW, expect the sea water temperature to drop out of the mid 70s into the mid-high 60s. The waves will start to lay down and the water will remain cloudy. Expect Tuesday’s weather to slow down the fishing a bit especially from the beach. Soundside fishing should improve for speckles and pups.

I’ve sent lots of people to Kitty Hawk Bay this year, but because of all the rain we’ve had lately, the water there is very fresh and the milfoil growth has exploded around the shorelines. All that aquatic vegetation makes it difficult to fish lures. If you’re willing to fight off the crabs, use natural bait (or just go crabbing).

Good reports of sheepshead from the pilings at the O. I. bridge. Flounder pounders are quiet right now but I’m hearing a lot of noise about red drum in the sounds (old drum).
