Fishing Report: 9/12/13

The weather she’s a’changing, enjoy it now cause tomorrow is a different day. Today’s high will be about 85 degrees, winds will be southerly around 10 mph or less eventually swinging NNE 20-25 this evening. 0% chance of rain today becoming 30% tonight. Sunset is 7:16 pm, sunrise tomorrow is 6:43 am.
First tide is high at 12:31 am, low at 6:51 am
Second tide is high at 1:13 pm, low at 7:51 pm

Sort of slow according to the piers this morning. OBX pier described it as a small parade – small spot, small bluefish, small croaker, etc, etc. Jennette’s said there was a medium swell with dirty water inside and clean at the end.

The offshore fleet had another fine day with over 100 white marlin released including several blue marlin and sailfish. Blackfin and yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are still jumping into the fishboxes.

We got a few fresh finger mullet yesterday, hoping for some more today. Do a good thing, take a kid fishing!! Coolbreeze out.

Fishing Report: 9/11/13

As far as “hump” days go, this would be an excellent one to skip whatever it is you’re supposed to be doing, instead grab your significant other and play hookey. Stroll the beach at Pea Island, take the ferry to Ocracoke, have a picnic on the pier, even if it’s just for an hour, get outside and enjoy your life for a little while cause this is a great day to do it. If it includes fishing, all the better!!

Look for a high of 83, sunny, 0% chance of rain, light SW wind backing to SE 5 to 15 mph. Sunset at 7:18 pm, sunrise tomorrow at 6:42 am.

First tide is low at 5:54 am, high at 12:13 pm
Second tide is low at 6:48 pm, no high predicted

The pier reports say the sea water temp is running 74 – 78 degrees and the water is muddy. The catching is kind of slow with mostly bluefish, sea mullet, spot, some puppy drum and small croaker – haven’t gotten any info from surf fishermen yet.

For Tuesday, Sept 10, we’re expecting a high of 84 degrees, light and variable winds clocking NE-SE and a 0% chance of rain. Sunset is at 7:14 pm, next sunrise tomorrow at 6:41 am.
First tide is low at 5:03 am, high at 11:19 am
Second tide is low at 5:50 pm, high at 11:35 pm

Pier reports say the water is 74 -78 degrees and not clear today. Jennette’s pier wins the mixed bag award w/catches of bluefish, Spanish, triggerfish, sheepshead, sea mullet, spot and a short cobia this morning. Heard a story yesterday of a cobia picking up a sea mullet rig less than 10 yds off the shoreline – it was lost when it straightened the size 4 hook. I need more surf fishing stories. The Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament is 4 weeks away. Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Surf Fishing Tournament is the 1st or 2nd week of November – start getting your gear together now. We need a good cold snap or a mld northeaster to start chasing fish out of Chesapeake bay. Have I mentioned fall is my favorite time of year on the OBX?

As long as the weather continues to be comfortable, the offshore fleet will continue to burn fuel chasing white marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, tuna and mahi-mahi. For a lot of folks these have been a trip of a lifetime.

Jerry at Fishing Unlimited said there was a good crowd early at the little bridge and they landed some croaker, black drum and small puppy drum this morning, then it got warm and they cleared out.

Fishing Report: 9/9/13

For Monday Sept. 9th the weather forecast is pretty decent. The winds will be E 10-15, expected high is 82 degrees and partly cloudy with a 0% chance of rain. Sunset is 7:20 pm and sunrise is tomorrow at 6:40 am.
First tide is low at 4:18 am, high at 10:31 am
Second tide is low at 4:57 pm, high at 10:45 pm

Calling the piers this morning, they said the ocean water temp was 74 -78 degrees and mostly clear. Catching was slow for a mixed bak of bluefish, spot, sea mullet, croaker and puppy drum.

Gary B said there were several flounder early today, mostly throwbacks, along with pups, speckles and black drum. Anyone know that spot, speckled trout and croaker are all in the drum family – true fact.

White marlin are still chewing off the sterns of the offshore fleet. Some blue marlin and sailfish have provided an added bonus for some anglers in addition to the tuna and mahi-mahi.

Bluefish and Spanish are the mainstay of the inshore fleet.

Fishing Report: 9/8/13

Excellent, we are being blessed with 2 beautiful days in a row, and on a weekend no less.  mostly sunny skies, high about 80, SW winds 10 mph or less and a 0% chance of rain. Sunset is 7:22 pm, sunrise tomorrow at 6:39 am. Ocean temp 74-79 degrees.
First tide is low at 3:36 am, high at 9:47 am
Second tide is low at 4:09 pm, high at 9:59 pm

First reports so far today from the piers is that the catching is a little slow this A.M. Ocean water temp is running 74 – 78 degrees and is relatively clean – bluefish and Spanish are a definite possibility.

If you can book a boat, white marlin, blackfin and yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are at the top of the offshore menu. Inshore and nearshore action includes bluefish, Spanish macs, cobia, trigger fish and speckled trout.

Fishing Report: 9/7/13

Feeling  a little fallish on Sept. 7th – expect a high of 78 under sunny skies with light NE winds of 10 mph or less and a 0% chance of rain. This is a great day to live on the OBX. Sunset tonight is at 7:23 with sunrise tomorrow at 6:39.
First tide is low at 2:58 am, high at 9:06 am
Second tide is low at 3:24 pm, high at 9:17 pm

Surf is 74-76 degrees and slightly dirty. Several of the piers are reporting puppy drum this morning with many inside the slot. With a day like this catching fish is just “gravy”! Avalon pier reports  catching lots of nice spot. Sea mullet are everywhere, come on and get you some.

The inshore and nearshore crews are finding spanish, bluefish, triggerfish, cobia, drum and speckles.

Jerry at Fishing Unlimited said they saw several flounder caught (at least one keeper), some sheepshead and croaker also.

White marlin fishing has been WHITE HOT. Pound for pound, this is the one of the most dramatic sport fish you will ever encounter, and we’re talking about right here off the outer banks. If you’re not into the show, you can opt for the meat and chase down tuna or mahi. Whatever you choose, it’s all good.

Fishing Report: 9/6/13

This is what we have to look forward to for Friday, Aug. 6th. Cooler today, high around 80, winds from the NE 15-20 and partly cloudy with a 0% chance of rain. Sunset tonight at 7:25 pm, sunrise tomorrow at 6:38 am. Because of  the NE winds, the ocean will be choppy and rough with water temps in the mid to high 70s.
First tide is low at 2:22 am, high 8:27 am
Second tide is low at 3:42 pm, high 8:38 pm

Already pretty rough for surf fishing but the piers are taking advantage of the catching. Jennette’s reported there were a few fishermen out decking some bluefish, spot and even a couple triggers today. It might be a good day to fish on the south beach of Hatteras Island.

Gary B at the little bridge said fishing was a little slow this morning but they had seen some small rockfish (striped bass), puppy drum and speckled being thrown back earlier this morning.

First call to the fishing center this morning indicated that the offshore boats were going out – multiple white marlin were caught and released and the meat hunters decked plenty of tuna and mahi-mahi.

Fishing Report: 9/5/13

Even though the forecast calls for a 0% chance of rain, I’m guessing scattered showers like the short one that just dumped on me are possible. Expect mostly sunny skies with a high around 82 degrees and light and variable winds. Sunset at 7:26 pm, sunrise tomorrow at 6:37. Ocean temp is 75-78 degrees and the surf is small at 1-2 feet.
First tide is low at 1:47 am, high at 7:49 am
Second tide is low at 2:00 pm, high at 8:00 pm

Not much noise from surf fishermen, so far all I’ve heard is some spot, sea mullet and small pompano.

Nags Head pier decked a 54 lb. cobia last night. Summer spot, sea mullet, bluefish, spanish and pompano are hitting the coolers on all the piers.

When the offshore boats come out of Oregon Inlet, they either go north for white marlin, or head south for tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo. Inshore  boats have been plenty busy trolling for bluefish and spanish, wreck fishing for tilefish, sea bass and triggerfish or working the sounds for trout, drum and flounder.

Fishing Report: 9/3/13

September 3rd calls for a high of 82 degrees and a 50% chance of rain. Winds will be SW at 10-15 mph. Sunset tonight is 7:29 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:36 am. Piers are calling the ocean water temperature at 72-74 degrees.
First tide is low at 12:38 am, high at 6:33 am
Second tide is low at 12:38 pm, high at 6:45 pm

Checking with the piers, the seas are flat and the water is not as dirty as yesterday. Fishing is a little slow with some bluefish and sea mullet. Nags Head had a couple large sheepshead.

Inshore boats stayed at the docks yesterday, haven’t heard their status today.

Offshore fishing is still a hot ticket for white marlin in multiple numbers. Mahi-mahi and tunas are filling the fish boxes.

Surf fishermen around Oregon Inlet are finding a decent puppy drum bite using fresh mullet.

Fishing Report: 8/30/13

The weather this weekend looks pretty comfortable. Today’s high should be around 80 with 0% chance of rain.
Winds will be NE 10-15.
Seawater temp is hanging at 74-75 degrees with wave height about 2-3 ft.
Sunrise was 6:32 am, Sunset is 7:35 pm
First high tide 3:10 am, low tide 9:15 am
Second high 3:46 pm, low 10:36 pm

Piers are reporting clean water with fair catches of sea mullet and bluefish and some spot. Jennette’s said they have some pompano and sand perch in the mix. If you’re interested in catching a white marlin the offshore action is white hot right now. Decent catches of mahi-mahi and tuna help to fill the fish box. Speck and puppy drum action in the sound is picking up at select locations.
