Fishing Report Nov 17th 2013

It’s Sunday Nov 17th.  The forecast is for a high of 69 degrees under mostly cloudy skies with a 0% chance of rain.  Wind will be light easterly shifting to south 10 -15 later.  Sunset is 4:55 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:41 am
First tide is low at 12:24 am with a high at 6 :43 pm
Second tide is low at 1:22 pm with a high at 7:01 pm

Yesterday was epic for “year 2011 class red drum” being caught on the northern outer banks.  Buxton jetties, Cape Point and Hatteras Inlet according to Red Drum Tackle has been off the hook surf fishing the last couple days.   Avalon reported keeper speckled trout during the early bite this morning.  Oregon Inlet beaches have been blistering red drum.  A customer this morning told me about catching a citation spec in his cast net.  Remember, possession for red drum is 1 fish between 18 – 27 inches per/day per/person. A speckled trout limit is 4 per/day, greater than 14 inches  (lets be real, a 14″ trout is a small trout).  Anyone need eels, we got lots of nice eels.

Enjoy your weekend!  TAKE A KID FISHING!!!     Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Nov 16th 2013

It’s Saturday Nov 16th and it doesn’t feel like it’s freezing anymore.  Wind is light E, skies are mostly sunny, high expected of 65 degrees, 0% chance of rain today.  Sunset at 4:55 pm, sunrise tomorrow is at 6:40 am.
First tide is high at 6:03 am and low is 12:40 pm
Second tide is high at 6:20 pm and the next low is early tomorrow morning

It’s a beautiful fall day to be outside.  If you didn’t want to spend it fishing, I believe you could be forgiven.  So far I’ve heard of lots of puppy drum and small speckled trout being caught from the surf this morning.  The water is clean and 59 – 60 degrees with small waves.  The piers are also reporting red drum, black drum and small trout.  Sources up north tell me there are still lots of  nice sized trout in the Chesapeake so maybe we have a shot at whacking them good when they start heading past us on the sandbar.

Some of the offshore fleet went out yesterday and decked nice yellowfin, mahi and a few wahoo.  Today should be another bonus day for them.

This is a great day to get outside and celebrate life – we don’t get  enough of them so enjoy it now.  TAKE A KID FISHING!!!

Fishing Report Nov 12th 2013

It’s Tuesday Nov 12th and “the weather she’s a’changing”.  “If you don’t like the weather, just wait a little while.”  Mostly cloudy, high around 52, slight chance of rain, winds west earlier, shifting north and building midday 15 – 30+.  Sunset 4:58 pm, sunrise tomorrow 6:36 am.  Low tonight in the mid 30s – brrrrrrrr!
First tide is high at 2:42 am with a low at 9:07 am
Second tide is high at 2:00pm and low at 9:22 pm

This morning Avalon pier reported lots of speckled trout, often two at a time, problem was they were all 10 – 13 inches.  Duck research pier posted the ocean temp at 61 degrees today and all the piers report the water as muddy.  Jennettes pier reported about a dozen folks fishing with catches of red drum, some bluefish, a  small flounder and a few puffers.  OBX pier had a couple folks fishing with only a few sea mullet to report.

Definitely not a boat day, so sad.

My suggestion is throw another comforter on the bed and bundle up w/your significant other and think warm thoughts for now.  Maybe later, TAKE A KID FISHING!!!    Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Nov 10th 2013

For Sunday Nov 10th we’re looking at sunny skies with a high of 62 degrees, with a 0% chance of rain, winds will be W 10- 15 mph.  Sunset is 4:59 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:54 pm.
First tide is high at 12:24 am and low at 6:42 am
Second tide is high at 12:49 pm with the low at 7:25 pm

Today is starting slowly but I expect it will pick up.  At 8 am this morning I called Avalon Pier and they reported there was no one fishing yet – their customers must have been out running in one of the marathon events today.  Checking in at Nags Head pier they told me of the 8 – 10 people on the pier no one had caught anything yet.  Jennettes pier staff reported 20 – 25 paying customers out on the planks and so far they were catching black drum, spot, sea mullet and small bluefish.  Outer Banks pier had 6-8 anglers and they had landed some trout, bluefish and puppy drum.  I’m guessing the OBX pier gets to win the morning S-n-S fishing report today.

Any big news comes this way, we’ll do an update.  TAKE A KID FISHING!!!   Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Nov 5th 2013

It’s Tuesday, Nov 5th, and these 15 – 25 mph NE winds are generating a strong onshore windswell that is complicating our ocean fishing report.  It’s mostly sunny today, expect a high of 61 degrees and a 0% chance of rain.  Sunset will arrive at 5:03 pm; sunrise tomorrow will be at 6:30 am.
First tide is low at 1:47 am with a high at 8:05 am
Second tide is low at 2:38 pm and a high at 8:26 pm

Although conditions are challenging, there are fish to be caught by those hardy and adventurous  souls willing to brave the brisk winds and surging seas.   Puppy drum love these conditions.

At the reddrumtackle.com site in the main forum (click on AGE) there is an interesting thread discussing the age and  growth rate of red drum, our state fish.  In 2011 N C marine biologists reported there had been the “most productive spawn in decades” that year.  Correspondingly in fall of 2012 there were very good catch numbers of 13″-17″ fish.  These slot-sized pups we are currently harvesting are that 2011 class and barring any weather anomalies will give us another good run next year after which they will graduate out of the N C slot to hopefully become a whole new mega class of breeders (or am I hoping for too much?  To quote Bob Eakes, “I hope we get completely  overrun with puppy drum.”).  This is where I say thank you to fish management and hope I live long enough to enjoy the benefits.

As always , TAKE A KID FISHING!!!  Coolbreeze out

Fishinf Report Nov 4th 2013

Well, at least it isn’t raining!  However, it is seasonably cool with 20 -30 mph NE winds, partly cloudy skies, expected high in the mid- 50s ( thanks for that 0% chance of rain ).  Sunset is 5:05 pm, sunrise tomorrow is 6:28 am.
First tide is low at 7:14 am and high at 12:58 am
Second tide is low at 7:33pm and high at 1:46 pm

Not a fun day on the beaches, the boats or the piers.  Duck Research Pier posted the sea water temp at 61 degrees.  The webcam showed Avalon as being empty.  At Jennettes they posted a picture of a lucky angler with a nice puppy drum.  Tomorrow is a different day.  We’ll hope for a sea change.  TAKE A KID FISHING!!!   Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Nov 3rd 2013

For the 3rd of Nov expect mostly sunny skies, 0% chance of rain, high around 58 degrees.  Winds will be northerly 15 – 25 mph, sunset at 5:06 pm EST and sunrise at 6:07 am EST ( did you set your clocks back from daylight saving time? )
First tide is low at 1:12 am and high at 6:28 am
Second tide is low at 12:58 pm and high at6:46 pm

As far as weekends go, this has been a slow one.  When I called Avalon this morning, Budgie told me there was no one fishing.  Duck Research posted the water temp @ 66 degrees.  Jennettes and Outer Banks piers had a few hardy souls with lines in the water but the only thing landed so far was a couple of skates.  Sean at Fishing Unlimited next to the little bridge reported that they had observed 1 (one) small trout and a puppy drum this morning.  Slow everywhere.  They must have enjoyed Halloween too much and forgot to set their clocks back.

Thursday morning the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament kicks off.   Good luck to everyone involved – I hope you all catch tons of fish this week.

As always, TAKE A KID FISHING!!!   Coolbreeze out
