Fishing Report Oct 1st 2013

The first day of Oct looks to be relatively pleasant.  The winds have dropped to less than 10 out of the N with sunny skies and a 0% chance if rain.  Sunset is at 6:48 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:57 am.
First tide is high at 5:13 am and a low at 11:22 am
Second tide is high at 5:25 pm and low at 11:50 pm

The really good news today is even though the government shutdown has closed down Cape Hatteras National Seashore to ORV’s.  Kill Devil Hills beaches are open and FREE to the public and vehicles.  We strongly suggest airing down your tires before driving on the beach to protect the access ramps from getting chewed by over inflated tires.

The piers report the water temp is hovering around 70 degrees and the surf is muddy.  Catches include puppy drum, spot croaker and sea mullet.

Fishing Report Sept 30, 2013

It’s Monday, the last day of Sept 2013 under cloudy skies with a slight chance of rain; winds are N 10-15, expected high of 75 degrees with sunset at 6:49pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:57am.
First tide is high at 4:26am, low at 10:32 am
Second tide is high at 4:40pm and low is 11:12pm

Calling around to the piers, it’s a rough sea, the water is murky and 70 degrees.  Channel bass, aka “old drum” are the main topic on the planks.  Anglers with their heavers are slinging ” 8 and bait ” ( 8 ounces of lead with a candy bar sized chunk of fresh fish ) off the end of one of the local piers then waiting for the pick-up.  A reel starts to sing, the rod owner hardens up the drag, sets the hook and the dance begins.  It could be a shark or a ray, but they’re hoping for a big drum.  If it doesn’t break them off, the fish is worked into a waiting pier net and raised onto the pier deck.  Photos are taken for posterity and the fish is unceremoniously thrown back in the drink, hopefully to do it again another time.  This is a drum day, windy, rough, murky, generally snotty, those fish like these conditions.  If you have a decent spot you can fish the surf today, maybe you can hang some nice sea mullet or a puppy drum.  Sand fleas and fresh mullet would be my baits of choice.

Winds are going to start laying down today, come in and pick out some fresh finger mullet and Take a Kid Fishing.

Fishing Report September 29th

For Sunday, Sept 29th, it’s still a little breezy out there but the wind is starting to drop out. High expected around 75 degrees, partly cloudy skies with less than 20% chance of rain. Sunset is 6:49 pm, sunrise tomorrow at 6:57 am. First tide is low at  9:36am am, high at 3:51pm pm Second tide is low at 10:32 pm

All the piers are telling me the ocean is rough and dirty and the water temp is about 70 degrees. Several large red drum have been caught and released from the pier ends. Bluefish, Spot and Crocker have been reported also. Conditions for surf fishing have been challenging at best with no reports yet.

Been out of town the last few days, consequently the fish report has been unavailable, but I’m back now and I’ll try to be more diligent. As always, Take a Kid Fishing. Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Sept 24, 2013

Tuesday Sept 24th is going to be one of those special days.  The wind is light out of the north at less than 10 mph with mostly sunny skies and a 0 % chance of rain.  The expected high will be 69 degrees with a sea water temp at a warm 72.  Sunset is 6:58 pm with sunrise tomorrow at 6:52 am.
First tide is low at 5:03 am and high is 11:19 pm
Second tide is low at 6:00 pm and high is 11:39 pm

There have been some big red drum caught from the piers during that blow we had – jennettes had 5 yesterday.  Sea mullet ,nice ones, and several slot sized puppy drum have been taken also from the surf.  Chatting with Avalon pier this morning the staff saw a couple specks being carried off the beach north of the pier – is the trout run starting?  Shorter days, northeast winds and cooler temps are sending messages to the baitfish, puppy drum and speckled trout that it’s time to start heading south (running the gauntlet we call the Outer Banks).

No boat report – the boats didn’t make it out yesterday.

Should have some more fresh finger mullet tomorrow.  Be a hero, take a kid fishing!!!

Fishing Report Sept 23 2013

O K, in addition to officially being fall, it really felt like fall as I came to work this morning, overcast skies, N winds 15 – 25, cool temps (too early for a frost).  I was comfortable in my hoodie and long trousers.  Alright, I’m pushing it a little – the sun is breaking out as I type this post, it’s not going to be miserable today.  Do expect mostly sunny skies with a high around 71 degrees and 0 % chance of rain.  Sunset is 7:00 pm and sunrise is tomorrow at 6:51 am
First tide is low at 4:21 am and high is 10:34 am
Second tide is low at 5:12 pm and high is 10:53 pm

Calling around to the piers, things are a little slow this morning.  There are a couple drum fishermen testing the waters but not much action so far.  Water is clean but rough with temps reported between 70 – 74 degrees.  The current along the beach is strong making it challenging for surf fishing – south beach on Hatteras would be a better choice if you really wanted to go surf fishing.
The little bridge didn’t report much activity either – not many anglers, not much catching.

Too rough for the boats – no one went out, maybe tomorrow.

Come on in, we got lots of new long sleeved Salt Life and Calcutta tees.

Fishing Report Sept 22 2013

For Sunday Sept 22 2013, it is definitely a different day.  Today is the autumnal equinox, the first day of fall (officially sometime this afternoon).  Last nights showers will probably continue through midday yielding to partly cloudy skies with a high of 76 degrees.  South winds at less than 10 mph will shift to NNE increasing to 15-20 mph as the edge of this front passes over  early this afternoon.  Sunset is 7:04 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:50 am
First tide is low at 3:39 am, high is 9:51 am
Second tide is low at 4:25 pm and high at 10:05 pm

The weather is putting a damper on fishing action this morning.  Checking with the piers fishermen are in the single digits but it tends to be a slow start on sundays anyway.  Sea water temp at the Duck pier is 73 degrees.  Am expecting some more puppy drum and sea mullet to show up in the surf – sand fleas should be the first bait of choice.  Here’s hoping this weather starts chasing some fish out of the Chesapeake Bay.

Fishing Report: Sept 21 2013

It’s Saturday and if you’re traveling north off the sandbar you need to allow your self extra time to cross the Wright Memorial Bridge.  The northern connector is closed for resurfacing and the southern span will be two way traffic and a choke point during times of high usage (read that as weekends).
Today’s weather will be seasonal with partly cloudy skies, a high about 81 degrees, winds S @ 5 mph early shifting to SW later building  to 10-15.  0 % chance of rain during the day with a 60 % chance of thunderstorms this evening.  Sunset is 7:03 pm, sunrise tomorrow is 6:49 am.
First tide is low at 3:32 am and high at 9:07am
Second tide is low at3:39 pm and high at 9:26 pm

Most of the piers are reporting bluefish, some spanish and puppy drum.  Sea water temps are between 72-74 degrees.  In the surf catching is good for sea mullet, pompano and puppy drum – sand fleas are the bait of choice.  We hear there is lots of bait in the surf but the fall speckled trout run has not kicked in yet – if you want to catch a trout, focus on the sound for now.   Popping corks with berkley gulps are a good bet.

Offshore action is about as good as gets.  It’s not going to last forever so if you’d like to make a lifetime memory this is the time.  Yesterday’s marlin bite was incredible plus the meat fishermen had lots of variety.

If you’ve got an interesting fish story, come on in and share, we like fish stories.  Take a kid fishing,  Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report: 9/17/13

Fishing was good on the sandbar yesterday, but today is a different day. Expect partly cloudy skies, high about 73 degrees and winds out of the NE 15 – 25 mph. Sunset is 7:09 pm.
First tide is high at 5:57 am, no low in this cycle
Second tide is low at 12:19 pm, high is 6:23 pm

Standing on the beach today, the NE winds are pretty much in your face trying blow back whatever you throw. If you must fish the surf, look for the deeper sloughs and fish the first 15 yds for puppy drum and sea mullet or whatever. Plan B has us wading in protected areas like Oregon inlet, off island slough, new inlet or south beach on Hatteras.

Plan C means today is a shopping day so come on in to the Stop n Shop and check us out. If the store is open, so is our deli – we serve breakfast sandwiches all day. If you bring your own coffee cup, we’ll fill it up for .29 plus tax – fresh coffee for .31 cents, such a deal!!! All clothing is 20% off this week. Come on in!!

When the wind lays down, you can take a kid fishing! Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report: 9/14/13

The winds have kicked it up a notch or two out of the NNE 15 – 25 mph. Little cooler today with a high of 74 degrees under partly cloudy skies and a 0% chance of rain. Sunset is 7:13 pm and tomorrow’s sunrise is 6:44 am.
First tide is high at 2:44 am, low is 9:05 am
Second tide is high at 3:25 pm, low is 10:03 pm

It’s not officially fall yet but it’s showing a lot of signs: shorter days, cooler nights, less traffic, and changing fish patterns. We’re running 2-3 weeks behind what is normal for this time of year and this small cool front will help accelerate bait movement out of the Chesapeake bay. With the bait schools will come more puppy drum and the very popular speckled trout. Right now sea mullet (roundhead, whiting, kingfish) is a very hot ticket. A handmade 2 hook bottom rig (size 4-6 long shank fine wire hooks) w/a couple sand fleas (mole crabs) for bait is a deadly setup. Lob it into the wash (5-10 yds) and keep light tension on the line. Don’t be surprised if a puppy drum picks it up – they love rough water also. Don’t cast to the bar, keep your bait inside and it will happen. Then come into the Stop n Shop and share your fish story with us.

Fishing Report: 9/13/13

It’s going to be mostly cloudy, high 82 degrees, 30% chance of rain with winds west shifting to north 10 – 15 mph. Sunset is 7:15 pm, tomorrow sunrise is 6:43 am.
First tide is high at 1:35 am, low is 7:55 am
Second tide is high at 2:18 pm, low at 8:58 pm

So far today the surf and pier reports are on the slow side. Duck research lists the sea water temp at the end of the pier as a nipply 66 degrees and the rest of the piers say the water is murky and grassy.

The boats had a fine day of catching: the offshore fleet was beating off mahi-mahi, yellowfin and wahoo with their gaffs; inshore boats had limits of puppy drum and trout; nearshore trollers slayed bluefish and Spanish and the wreck fisherman decked triggerfish, tilefish and amberjack.
